The Goddess Juno and Her Peacock. France, late 1500’s.
This elegant Mannerist masterpiece may be a courtly portrait of Marie de Medici depicted as the Goddess Juno and commissioned by the Queen herself. Barthelemy Prieur in sculpture had depicted Marie de Medici as Juno-also nude to the waist as here and Peter Paul Rubens had also depicted the Queen as Juno in his celebrated painting cycle.
